Living and Working in Latvia Living in Latvia is likely to be the end of most people’s rainbows. Though I could live anywhere in the European Union I will retire here through preference. For those still working and whose career doesn’t necessitate their living in a fixed country Latvia is ideal. As an international journalist I am a good example. You may recall the story; a local authority planning specialist planned to take early retirement to Australia. This presented a dilemma until it was realized that he could do his computer-based work equally well from the antipodes 12,000 miles distant. It was a win-win situation. It isn’t uncommon for key workers to work in the UK but commute home at the weekends. I think you will discover it is quicker, easier and cheaper to travel to Riga than it is to travel to work from your home in England. Enjoy a Canadian or Swiss valley lifestyle within two hours of your local UK airport.

| IS LANGUAGE A PROBLEM? .
Is language a problem? No more than it might be in Spain. In Latvia English is taught in schools and commonly spoken in most of the places you are likely to visit. We introduce you to English-speaking Latvian friends who, just a telephone call away, will always be there to assist and advise you. You are never abandoned. |
GETTING ABOUT IN LATVIA On my first 12-week visit bringing my car wasn’t an option and I dreaded being without it. Buying cycle for €80 was the best decision I ever made. There are few hills here: I lost weight, I was soon as fit as a butcher’s dog. Cycling to the local inns, town centre and shopping malls has been the most exhilarating experience imaginable. If I had a car it would stay in its garage. If we decide to spend a day in Riga 57 km distant why use the car? The buses are frequent, clean and it costs just €2.50. I have travelled all over Latvia by bus; . If you want a car then they are cheap enough but try living without one first. You won't regret it. .
LIFESTYLE
. Having lived in urbanisation Spain for years I can say the biggest problem is cold winters; summers far too ho, and boredom. One restaurant is very much like another; that is it. I couldn’t get my 27-year old son’s to visit me.
Here in Sigulda there are four wonderful seasons and a truly Canadian lifestyle. There are forests and beaches; day trips. The most beautiful log cabin inns a cycle ride away. There are more sports than I have space to name. I defy anyone to get bored in this part of Latvia. . For your convenience we speak English, Latvian, Russian, German, Spanish and French.
